  9. Note: Shredr Plus is distributed as shareware.  If you find yourself
  10. using the program then you are obligated to pay for it.  The

  18.    Area Code Locator
  19.         Locates and identifies all telephone area codes for the US
  20.         and Canada.  Shows selected cities within area codes, and 
  21.         the current time in each location.  Runs in medium or high
  22.         resolution, as a program or desk accessory.

  24.    PoSTal
  25.         Identifies postal abbreviations for states and provinces in 
  26.         North America.  Also includes limited support for zip codes
  27.         within each area.  Runs in medium or high resolution, as a
  28.         program or desk accessory.

  30.    Hot!Stat
  31.         This is an analysis tool to be used in conjunction with the
  32.         program ledgering feature of HotWire from Codehead Software.
  33.         Compiles daily, weekly, or monthly statistics with report
  34.         writing to screen, disk, or printer.  Runs in medium or
  35.         high resolution.  Requires a source for HotWire ledgers in
  36.         order to be useful.

  39. receive the latest version of Shredr Plus) your donation of $10.00
  40. will entitle you to free lifetime updates to *all* the utilities.

  54. About Shredr Plus:
  55.  
  56. Purpose:
  57.  
  58. Shredr Plus is about privacy and protection.  Normally when a file is
  59. deleted by the ST operating system it can actually remain on the disk
  60. for quite some time.  This is because deleted files are only flagged
  61. as being "disposable", that is, the space is identified as being no
  62. longer needed and free to be used by other files if required.  The
  63. file itself therefore will stay on the disk until its space is
  64. reused by a new file.  If you delete a large file from the disk, and
  65. then never fully fill the disk with new files, fragments of your
  66. original file could remain and be vulnerable to snooping by someone
  67. using a sector editor.

  69. Now admittedly the fact that deleted files are not really overwritten
  70. can work to your advantage.  Say you accidently delete a file and
  71. then later discover that you meant to save it.  Using an "un-delete"
  72. program it may be possible to recover the original file provided that
  73. the space it occupied hasn't been reused by a new file.  Thus this
  74. feature can, under some circumstances, provide a comfortable "safety
  75. net" for your important files.  However, if the file you think you
  76. are deleting contains sensitive or personal information (such as
  77. financial records or personal correspondence) it may be important
  78. that all of the file, and all the information it contains, is
  79. permanently deleted.  
  80.  
  81. Think about it for a moment.  Have you ever erased files on an old
  82. disk, then reused that disk to copy some public domain programs for
  83. your friend or user group?  If that disk originally held personal
  84. files it is possible that whoever you give that disk to could recover
  85. some of that information you were so careful to "erase"! And imagine if
  86. you were selling off an old hard drive!  Just think of all the
  87. information that may be lurking in the 30 megabytes of sectors you
  88. have there!

  90. Shredr Plus is the answer to your problems.  When you are absolutely,
  91. positively sure that you want to erase a file, *forever*, use it to
  92. do the job.  Shredr Plus will open your file and overwrite each and
  93. every sector with garbage characters, totally jumbling the contents
  94. of the the original file. It will be virtually impossible to ever
  95. recover a file that has been "shredded" with this program.

  97. (Disclaimer: hard drive manufacturers and the NSA have been known to
  98. be able to recover information regardless of how many times the file
  99. has been overwritten.  But such techniques are not available to the
  100. average computer user so don't loose too much sleep over it...)

  111.    *  User selected configuration is saved and recalled for each
  112.       session.  Can be changed at any time.
  113.    *  Fully supports wildcard characters in file names.  Shred
  114.       multiple files in one operation.
  115.    *  Speed of operation has been doubled from earlier version.
  116.    *  Graphical progress bar shows current action of the program,
  117.       and allows aborting of any shred in progress.
  118.    *  Fail safe design gives two chances to "bail out" before
  119.       any destructive actions take place.

  138. While Shredr Plus has been tested and proven to be safe and effective
  139. there is no warranty as to its performance or fitness for a specific
  140. purpose.  It uses only standard system calls and should not, under
  141. normal circumstances, do anything nasty to your system.  However the
  142. user assumes all risks and damages associated with using it.  The
  143. bottom line is this:  I'm not a lawyer.  I trust this program and use
  144. it often.  I think you'll like it too.  But if it doesn't
  145. perform as you expect or causes you to accidently erase a file, I'm
  146. sorry, but that's the best I can do.  The potential for danger is
  147. present, and you've been warned..okay?   I wouldn't even put this
  148. disclaimer in here but you never know about some people. In case it
  149. hasn't been made clear to you what this program does, let me restate
  150. it:  THIS PROGRAM WILL TOTALLY RUIN ANY FILE YOU SELECT.  USE IT
  151. WITH CAUTION AS ONCE SOMETHING IS SHREDDED IT IS GONE FOREVER.  MAKE
  152. DARN SURE YOU ARE ERASING THE FILE YOU THINK YOU ARE ERASING.

  155. Using Shredr Plus
  156.  
  157. Click on SHREDRPL.PRG to get things going.  The first time you run
  158. the program a box will appear with the message "Randomizing Overwrite
  159. String, one moment please".  This box will stay on the screen a few
  160. seconds while the program creates a random collection of characters
  161. that will be used to overwrite any of the files you select in this
  162. session.

  164. After a few moments the Shredr Plus main menu will appear.  The menu
  165. is a small box containing three items: a drawing of a shredding
  166. machine, the words DNS Software, and a box marked EXIT.  Each of
  167. these items has a different function.

  169.       Shredding Machine: Click either mouse button on this picture
  170.       (or press the "S" key on your keyboard) and a standard ST file
  171.       selector will appear.
